In 2008 Noah and the Whale’s debut album, Peaceful the World Lays Me Down, paved the way for alternative-folk to go mainstream. Their second album soundtracked a short film by the band,The First Days of Spring. In a definitive move away from the alt-folk tag, the arrangements on this album were orchestral rather than folk: the days of ukulele, glockenspiel and whistling accompaniments became a distant memory.
